Calvin Staples

Why do I coach?
I coach to help children learn the benefits of competitive sport - teamwork, self-sacrifice and the sense of accomplishment that comes with achievement. The sports field is a place where children can learn life long skills and create meaningful memories that will last a life time
-
What is success to me?
Success is all about progression - it's not the outcome necessarily, it's progress along the way. At the end of the season if the kids can't wait to sign up, tryout or play fall ball than success was achieved.
-
Fun fact:  I went to the same school as Ryan Howard, Bill Mueller, and Luke Voit but didn't play the same sport!

Why do I coach?
I coach because I like to teach. I am a teacher by trade, so naturally was drawn to coaching a sport that I love so much. I also love to learn, about the game we love, and about the kids. How to best motivate and encourage players to help each individual reach their potential and achieve optimal team results is a passion of mine.
-
What is success to me?
Success means setting a goal and trying to achieve it. Maybe you do achieve it, maybe you don’t, but you are always learning and growing. Learning and trying your best to reach a goal is success.
Fun fact:
I got back into gardening a lot during the pandemic. We’ve grown a wide range of fruits and vegetables, including corn, cantaloupe and watermelon. #covidgardener #greenthumb

Why do I coach?
I coach because I enjoy watching the kids grow and develop the game. I get a great feeling when the players apply something that was taught to them in practice in the game. I also love seeing the players excitement when they come to the field every practice and game.
-
What is success to me?
Success to me is seeing the players develop throughout the year. I love when I can point out to a player on an issue that they were weak at when the season started and how they improved at the end of the season and see the reaction.
-
Fun fact:
Over the past year I have started to cook and bake things I have never done before including homemade bread, apple fritters and a six layer cake to name a few – ask me and I will show you pictures!

Why do I Coach?
I grew up playing Kitchener minor sports and had such amazing coaches to help and guide me as a youth. I want to pay it forward and be a positive influence to the next generation. I want all the players coming up to have the great experience I had, and to teach them to love the game of baseball.

What is Success to me?
I feel success on the ball diamond is about giving your all for the team and never taking a play off.

To quote the great Vince Lombardi “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”

Fun Fact? : I learned to love the game by watching my dad play baseball and practicing on the sidelines with my brother and cousin until the game was over. Then we could go hit balls and run the bases as soon as they finished.

I also practiced my batting, by hitting rocks into the water at my family cottage with the logs I found on the beach and having home run derby’s with my cottage friends.

Why do I coach?
-
I coach for the Panthers because I've been the biggest fan of the Panthers since I entered baseball.  Half my idols as a young child player are now coaches in the Panther system.  There's nothing like the Panther baseball community.  100 years!  Even in a hockey town.
What is success to me?
Success is in every detail of the game.  It's every progression you build into practice plans.  Success is everytime a player asks a follow up question and wants to know the game more.  Success is watching the ones that decide to grind it out and don't have time for excuses
-
Fun Fact: I weed a mean garden.

I enjoy teaching players baseball skills and life skills.
I also love watching players become friends and good team mates when things are going good and when they face tough times.

-

What is success to me?
To me success is making sure that each player we coach enjoys and respects the game.
Success is making sure each player improves  and feels like he is a big part of the team.
Plus that they can hardly wait to get to the park to play a game or practice.

Why do I coach?
Coaching is both teaching by sharing my experience and learning by getting to know kids and their families. I think coaches have important roles in building a sense of community and I hope that by participating in coaching I can help make the community better.    It is also a great excuse to throw the ball around more and have some fun
-
What is success to me?
Success is when the kids develop a new skill or ability and use it in a game. The confidence that is built through working hard in practice and having it pay off in a moment on the field is an important life lesson.

Why do I coach?
I love the game of baseball!  I bring this love and experience as a player in my youth to the teams I coach.
-
What is success to me?
My staff and I work hard to provide a space for individuals and the team as a whole to grow and improve as the season progresses.  Win or lose, seeing how the team comes together as the season concludes is great to be a part of.  Regardless of our accomplishments, we leave the field for the final time believing we competed.
